OK, because somebody said I should do it, here's an overview of what I got at MoCCA. I've sorted it by creator, so if you're googlehunting yourself (you people know who you are), know that I gave you a few shekels:
Tony Beland:
Jeffrey Brown:
Max Estes:
Brandon Hanvey:
Damon Hurd:
Neil Kleid:
Pat Lewis:
Jim Mahfood:
Bryan Lee O'Malley:
Alex Robinson:
Jim Rugg:
Rick Spears:
Joe Staton:
Adam Suerte:
Fred Van Lente:
Sara Varon:
Tony Beland:
- A downright awesome sketch and the company of his charming wife Lily, who I may now be a little in love with myself.
Jeffrey Brown:
- An Easy Intimacy, which I enjoyed quite a lot.
- His new mini, These Things, These Things, which revolves around his discovery of a new musician. If I drew, this is exactly the sort of mini I would do. I do not draw, however, which is probably for the best.
Max Estes:
- Hello, Again, which I need to properly review in the near future. The short version is: very, very strong debut graphic novel.
- An ashcan for Coffee and Donuts: A Junkyard Cats Comic, which looks very much like something I'll enjoy.
Brandon Hanvey:
- The Stereos: Battle Of The Bands
- The Stereos: In The Garage. Reviewed below.
Damon Hurd:
- Temporary #s 2 and 3, with art by Rick Smith. Ian gave this a fairly negative review in The Comics Journal, and I can see his problems with the book, but I've enjoyed each issue I've read so far.
Neil Kleid:
- Pilgrimage: Two Weeks in G-d's Country
- An ashcan preview of his upcoming graphic novel about the Jewish Mafia, Brownsville, featuring art by Jake Allen.
Pat Lewis:
- Hideous
- Obsessive Crush
- Thankless Job. I reviewed all three of these below. I liked them quite a lot.
Jim Mahfood:
- A sketch of "whatever he wanted," which I plan on scanning in when I buy a scanner, which will be sometime soon, I promise. I can't describe it well, as language hasn't built metaphors that can adequately explain the surreal content. There's a dude, a floating record, a little girl...it's just cool, OK?
- Pencil Sharpener #s 1 and 2 - neat little limited edition sketchbooks. Only 100 of one and 200 of the other, featuring a sketch he does for each copy.
- We Love Porn. Dirty! Funny!
Bryan Lee O'Malley:
- A freaking awesome sketch in exchange for some CDs.
- Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. Kick ass.
Alex Robinson:
- A sketch of the female lead from his forthcoming graphic novel, Tricked, that looks way, way too much like Kristin.
- Tales of Action And Adventure Which Will Leave Your Senses Shattered No. 1. My mind boggles at the awesomeness herein. You probably won't be able to handle it until you're a much more sophisticated comics reader than you currently are.
Jim Rugg:
- A beautifully-done sketch of Afrodisiac from Street Angel. Rock.
Rick Spears:
- An ashcan "test" for Dead West, featuring pages that won't a appear in the book, drawn by Rob G, his Teenagers From Mars co-creator.
- An ashcan for Valentine, his upcoming vampire graphic novel with Vasilis Lolos.
Joe Staton:
- A sketch of Captain Marvel, because told him to draw whoever or whatever he wanted.
Adam Suerte:
- Aprendiz 1-3. This is his autobiocomic about being an apprentice tattoo artist. Beautifully rendered, freely flowing art and a narrative that's compelling as hell. Ed knows what I like.
Fred Van Lente:
- Action Philosophers and the Action Philosophers Sex Special, with art by Ryan Dunlavey. Hilarious and educational!
- A free copy of The Silencers #4, which I've not even opened yet.
Sara Varon:
- The Present, a charming little minicomic she did for the Walker Art Museum. If you've not, check our her Sweaterweather.
