Pre-reviews: The Week of October 4, 2006

Here's what's going to be in your local
comics shop on Wednesday, October 4, 2006

Ignore that list. Trust me, instead.

DC Comics
JUL060230 BOYS #3 (MR) $2.99
Johnston had a rumor a couple of weeks ago that this was delayed because of an explicit oral sex scene featuring a rather dead-on tribute to the Teen Titans.

A very black, very cold part of me really loves that idea.
AUG060294 OTHER SIDE #1 (OF 5) (MR) $2.99
Cameron Stewart draws the Vietnam War. Sure, you could write "Cameron Stewart draws a plate of snack cakes" and I would likely buy it and try to find out if there's a print available, but this looks seriously up my alley, with "rookie sensation" Jason Aaron scripting a complex horror story that should serve as some kind of allegory for the country's current situation..
JUN060252 WINTER MEN #5 (OF 8) (RES) (MR) $2.99
Finally.

AUG061765 CROSS BRONX #2 (MR) $2.99
I never wrote about the first issue of this! I very much enjoyed Cross Bronx #1. It was smart and followed every good rule of comics scripting I have written on the inside of my skull. There's some quiet moments of characterization that stood out beautifully.
JUL061712 ROCKETO #12 $3.99
I still buy this, but am probably switching to trades going forward.

Marvel
AUG062026 AGENTS OF ATLAS #3 (OF 6) $2.99
Read this, and outside of a massive continuity-patching bit in the middle, it went down nice and smooth. I understand that Parker probably had to do a long explanation of Marvel Boy's past, but man...I'd just like to get to the robot-and-monkey-fighting show more quickly!
AUG062090 CRIMINAL #1 (MR) $2.99
Unlike some bloggers, I'm not going to repeatedly email people and tell them to read this, but I will say that the first issue was a fantastic "pilot" that reminded me of what I loved of Sleeper without having the detritus of the Wildstorm universe clinging to its undercarriage. Lean, mean, and elegant, this is probably the Q4 2006 major-label launch I'm most excited about, and that includes Grant Morrison on Authority.
AUG062042 DOCTOR STRANGE OATH #1 (OF 5) $2.99
I read it. I very much enjoyed it. I will get it in trade paperback. Neilalien should be pleased, especially as this uses some of the characterization we saw in the recent Dead Girl miniseries.
AUG062122 DR STRANGE VS DRACULA MONTESI FORMULA TP $19.99
I'm looking forward to this a tremendous amount. It's Dracula and Doctor Strange, hexing and mojoin' and stuff. That'll be complete bloody class, I imagine, considering that Wolfman, Englehart, and Stern did the writing while Colan, Green, and Lealoha did the art. That's like my Secret 70s Dream Team for Marvel, right there.

Other Comics Companies
AUG063293 COMPLETE PEANUTS VOL 6 1961-1962 HC $28.95
The greatest comic strip ever. Yeah, I said it. Anyone that wants to fight me will get beaten with a copy.
JUL063386 HOW TO MAKE MONEY LIKE A PORN STAR GN (MR) $19.95
Now you can leave a copy of the most revulsive book I've read this year on the shelf at your local comics shop, just like you may have done at a large bookstore that got it earlier thanks to Diamond Comics deciding to not treat their customers like they might be businesses!
JUL062778 VAULT OF MICHAEL ALLRED #1 (OF 4) $6.99
I am always glad about getting more Allred, as long as it doesn't try to make me want to read the Book of Mormon. (By the way, did that series just peter out or what?)
MAY063452 VILLAINS #4 (OF 4) (MR) $3.25
I don't think I've ever gotten around to mentioning this title from Viper Comics. It's a very well-done thing that takes place in the same sort of world as Powers without having uselessly elliptical dialogue and it manages to make a point pretty consistently. In other words, it's not selling anywhere near as much and the target audience is probably going to miss it entirely.

I love the comics business.
MAR063469 WALLYS WORLD DLX HC $49.95
MAR063468 WALLYS WORLD HC (RES) $34.95
APR063427 WALLYS WORLD SC (RES) $24.95
I'm not sure if I ordered this great-looking Biography of Wally Wood, but it's going to be a must-read for me, isn't it?

And that's it! It's a really big week, and with Absolute New Frontier coming to me from Amazon, I really rather hope we have very early snowstorm (that looks extremely unlikely, but I am praying) so I can chillax with some of the apple brandy that Kristin retrieved from her mom's place.
