Two pictures from my MoCCAFest weekend.

I’m sure I’ll do a “comprehensive” post when I get all the ducks in a row, but here’s two of the dozens of photos I took during Saturday night’s revelry.

More forthcoming.

You may want to cut this out for easy reference.

Step One
Become a really great graphic designer.

Step Two
Create a design for a cute air freshener.

Step Three
Have it appear in the upcoming Transformers live-action motion picture.

So far, so good, right? Now we’re at the very crucial…

Step Four
Find out that Dreamworks has swiped your design for the film’s merchandising without compensation.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is urgently looking for help with the Gordon Lee trial, which is slated to start on the week of August 13. County prosecutors in Georgia have sought to convict Lee on two felony counts and five misdemeanors. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has successfully knocked out all but two of the remaining misdemeanor counts of Distribution of Harmful to Minors Material and is hoping to take care of the rest in short order.

Said a spokesperson: “We’ve not seen local law enforcement vigorously pursue such a minor charge since 1977′s Coors smuggling incident.”

In Marvel news, Fruit of the Loom will soon be making its own line of Underoos-styled underwear. A warning to some of you looking to relive your youth and thinking you could probably squeeze into the kid’s XL…

Fox picked up a fourth season of American Dad on Thursday, along with two new creations by Seth MacFarlane: The Shimpsons and Guy With A Family. In related news, a large envelope of negatives was couriered to Fox TV president Ed Wilson’s office this morning.

A 13-year-old girl in Kentucky was severely injured while riding on Six Flags’ Superman: Tower of Power ride. The ride will be shut down while park officials investigate. Also closed for inspection are Batman: The Beating and Aquaman’s Wet T-Shirt Adventure.

Rumors are swirling that Samuel L Jackson will be playing Nick Fury in the upcoming Iron Man movie. With Iron Man being the first of the superhero comic films produced independently by Marvel, may be establishing the Nick Fury role for a future movie, using the Ultimate version of the character as a template.

In further casting news, Greg Land has been contacted in order to sort out which models he’s used as “reference” for a forthcoming direct-to-DVD coproduction the comics publisher has lined up with Larry Flynt’s Hustler Studios. Ultimate Penetration will hit shelves in “book stores” near airports across America next spring.

And now, your quote of the week, and it comes from Forbidden Planet’s Richard Bruton, talking about The Eternals:
But enough of first impressions; the actual book itself was one of those things I just wasn’t sure about because to me the very idea of Gaiman at Marvel is slightly jarring, like listening to Kraftwerk cover a Kylie song.

We’ll be back Monday; let’s just hope something happens this weekend worthy of coverage. As stated in previous post about The Rack, I’ll be at MoCCA fest with Birdie and a stack of brand-new postcards that will certainly set hearts aflutter.

It’s character spotlight time at The Rack, wherein we get a long, slightly creepy look at the interior of one cast member’s skull. Will you be able to bear what you gaze upon, or will you be forced to your knees by the stunning revelations within?

It should also be noted that both Birdie and myself will be at MoCCA and despite not having a table, we’ll have the brand-new promotional postcards for The Rack, which you could, I dunno, use as a bookmark or something. It’s nice-looking.

Transformers fans are already reacting poorly to the new cartoon’s design choices.

Said one: “Once I’m finished constructing this timeline that allows the events of the Bayformers movie to take place in parallel to Beast Wars, Beast Machines, Generation 1 and The War Within, I’ll start a petition to get this series canceled preemptively despite the fact this cartoon is aimed at 10-year-olds and not Blockbuster Video managers who moderate the forums at www.sexy-arcee.com.”

In further cartoon news, Lionsgate announced that Nicktoons will air the first 26 episodes of a new Speed Racer animated series. The series will feature the son of the original Speed Racer competing at a prestigious racing academy. No word yet on how closely this will mimic look and feel of the original series, but we’re already looking forward to breathless recitations of Racer X’s relationship to the new Speed whenever the character appears on screen.

The Platinum Studios graphic novel Cowboys and Aliens has been optioned by DreamWorks and Universal Pictures for development as a live-action motion picture. This marks the project’s return to DreamWorks, the studio it had first been associated in 2004. The option lapsed and was picked up by Columbia Pictures, hyped, then dropped again. In 2006, an extremely low-cost, badly-reviewed Cowboys and Aliens graphic novel was pushed into the market amidst rumors of price tinkering to ensure a #1 slot in the sales chart.

Let’s see: unstable, cheap, foisted off on unwary studios, and nobody in the audience seems to want it around? Cowboys and Aliens is like the Lindsay Lohan of recent comic book projects.

An unproduced Repo Man sequel’s script will be the basis of an upcoming graphic novel. The filmmaker has reported that if all goes well, he may look at doing the same for other sequels that were shelved.

Marvel and Dynamite announced that Spider-Man and Red Sonja would be teaming up in a forthcoming comic. This brings us to…

Normally, at this point, we’d say something about the upcoming Stan Lee action figure, but we used up our single Lee action-figure related joke yesterday.

And now, The Zombie Marvel Zombies:

Man, that looks classy.

A press release on Monday stated that Shocker Toys would be creating figures based on the final three contestants from the first season of Who Wants To Be A Superhero. Toys featuring Fat Momma, Feedback, and Major Victory will be joining other reality-show based action figures like Hell’s Kitchen‘s Gordon Ramsey, William Hung from American Idol, and the deluxe Donald Trump/Rosie O’Donnell Feud 2-pack. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Who Wants To Be A Superhero host Stan Lee claims to have created the concept of action figures while working as a shoeshine boy in the 1920s.

Zack Snyder talked to Wizard about the film adaptation of Watchmen he’s working on. About the production, the 300 helmer said:
…if you ever want to make another movie, then you’re in trouble if you don’t look at it from the standpoint of, “What are the images I need here?” Dr. Manhattan walking through Vietnam 200 feet tall, the Comedian riding with the 50-caliber rifle and shooting at the Viet Cong and burning out the village.

Those images are going to be like, “What the f—?” Or you have Rorschach being taken down by the SWAT cops – that’s a cool sequence.

It may be important to note that the words “writing,” “screenplay,” “intelligent,” “interesting,” and “not complete crap” appear nowhere in the article.

Marvel’s September solicitations have gone live and right off the bat, the Hype Machine is in full effect for Amazing Spider-Man #544: Get ready for what will be the most talked–about and controversial comic event of the year — brought to you by J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada.

In a move touted as an example of the publisher’s commitment to the environment, Amazing Spider-Man #544 is going to be printed on paper made from recycled copies of New Avengers #31, Captain America #25, and Civil War #7.

Also of note is the use of “cat fight” in not one, but two different solictations: Heroes for Hire #14 and Ms. Marvel #19. To be fair, however, the latter features Tigra, who’s catlike and foxy instead of just plain foxy.

Speaking of solicitations, DC’s own went up and they indicate that Allen Heinberg’s Wonder Woman storyline is finally going to get a wrap-up in the September annual featuring that character.

Also included is a backup story, featuring the secret origins of Wonder Woman, Donna Troy, Wonder Girl and….zzzz

I’m sorry, what?

Also in DC’s solicitations are a few books connected to the upcoming marriage of Black Canary and Green Arrow. Of course, some people aren’t very happy about this. Two things.

  1. When you use a handle like pervyficgirl, you don’t get to be taken seriously.
  2. These are super-heroes in a comic book! I’ve not seen anyone get this upset with a fictional marriage since Tom and Katie walked down the aisle.

And now, your easy joke of the day.

It’s been reported that Frank Miller will be directing an adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s Nothing But Trouble, starring Clive Owen.

Isn’t that like having Joe Francis edit Playboy?

“What’s this interview crap? More tits! More tits now.”

For I Have No Eyes And Must Sweat

Comments Off | Posted: June 19th, 2007 | Filed under: Uncategorized

Here’s a local newspaper article about my big giveaway.

Please note:

  • Normally, I have eyes.

  • I expressed concern about my sweat-drenched shirt and was told “Oh, it won’t show up.” Photographer David Gordon, you are a filthy liar!
  • Most importantly, Kristin didn’t insist that I get rid of comics. However, she encouraged it when the subject came up.

Your Comics News for June 19, 2007

Comments Off | Posted: June 19th, 2007 | Filed under: Uncategorized

At this past weekend’s Wizard World Philadelphia, Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria showed off the latest comic based on the band’s ideas. The Amory Wars looks to be an exciting tale of future weapons, alien warfare, and a complete lack of spelling ability when it comes to a title.

Newsarama interviewed Diana Schutz about the upcoming “final installment” in the Martha Washington saga, Martha Washington Dies. Newsarama’s Michael Lorah had apparently not heard the title when he asked the question: I don’t know how much you want to give away, but what can you give us as far as a tease about what to expect from Martha Washington Dies?

Michael, work with us here. It’s Frank Miller. He’s already written and drawn a book titled Elektra Lives Again where, get this, Elektra lived again. If he calls this thing Martha Washington Dies, I daresay she’s going to kick the bucket, dude.

This Monday saw the sophomore installment of Sci-Fi Channel’s new Ani-Monday programming block. Featuring Japanese animated series like Tokko and Ghost In The Shell: Solid State Society, the new group of cartoons replaces a similar, short-lived attempt by the network.

On Mondays, fans got a glimpse of Batman’s new motorcycle and many are glad to see that it continues the design scheme created with the Batmobile in Batman Begins. After all…

DC

Blue Beetle Vol 2 Road Trip - This and Morrison’s Batman are the only DCU titles I’m currently reading as singles. I highly recommend picking up this second trade, as Rogers’s scripting has a perfectly light touch and is smart while Rafael Albuquerque draws the heck out of it.

JSA Presents Stars And STRIPE Vol 1 – One of the smarter trade collections I’ve seen DC do, actually.

Image

Phonogram Vol 1: Rue Britanna – I loved this comic. Funny, smart, and surprising. During the big comics giveaway this past week, somebody cheered when they found the first couple of issues.

Repo #1 – Spears and G, etc, etc. I always enjoy their work together.

Marvel

Marvel Adventures Avengers Vol 3: Bizarre Adventures Digest and X-Men First Class – Yes, I’ll be getting these (and I really enjoyed the Marvel Adventures Avengers issues, but I mostly listed them to make sure you read this brief message from Jeff Parker, the writer.

Dark Horse

Aliens Omnibus Vol 1 – I enjoyed the first few Aliens series more than I should. Probably not enough to buy this unless it was severely discounted, but I think they’re decent-enough licensed comics.

About Comics

Schulz’s Youth – I’m always curious to check out non-Peanuts work by Schulz even if these strips promise to be more “inoffensive” than “good.”

ADV Manga

Cromartie High School Manga Vol 11 – The greatest comic ever, or the greatest thing ever?

Yotsuba&! Vol 4 – I’ve read the first volume of this and was charmed beyond my greatest expectations. I’ve ordered numbers 2 and 3 and hope to devour those installments with this

Drawn and Quarterly

Exit WoundsDave’s review made me want to pick this one up.

Fantagraphics

MOME Vol 8 Summer 2007 – I love the idea of MOME, but rarely like more than half the contents. The fact that Sophie Crumb’s work keeps showing up makes it harder for me to recommend it.

New Tales Of Old Palomar Vol 2 – More Gilbert Hernandez is always a good thing.

TwoMorrows

Image Comics The Road To Independence – Ah, Image Comics. Besides the irregularly-published Savage Dragon, do any of the original creators have an association with the publisher anymore?

Virgin Comics

John Woo’s Seven Brothers – I enjoyed this an almost shameful amount. It’s certainly not Garth Ennis’s best work, but there’s some great fun to be had here.

A question for any attorney-types out there? Does this:

Steve E. | sebbling3@hotmail.com | IP: 208.196.60.32

See you at MOCCA Kevin.
Be very careful who you bump into you fat load and watch the wisecracks, or we’ll see how many internet friends will get your back.

Just sayin’

…constitute a threat?

Here’s what I know:

  • “Steve Ebbling” visits from an IP that belongs to Grey Global Group.
  • “Steve Ebbling” is likely not his real name.
  • “Steve Ebbling” doesn’t realize there are other internet sites that he can visit, apparently.

Should I worry? I’m not a worrisome sort, in general, but having a stalker is completely out of my frame of reference.

Comics News!

Last week, it was announced that beloved Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee is going to be making a cartoon about Paris Hilton. Apparently forgetting how abysmally his Striperella bombed, the 85-year-old co-creator of icons such as Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, Nightcat, and Ravage 2099 is working with Hilton’s former paramour, Paris Latsis, to develop the 30-minute cable series.

It’s looking like leaked sex tapes featuring overexposed blondes have replaced Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. I suppose this means we’re going to see Toastee: Vampire Scissor-Hold Queen in the near future.

It looks like Marvel’s making some sort of last-ditch effort to shake off any lackluster Spider-Man fans by cancelling Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man to make room for Amazing Spider-Man‘s new thrice-monthly schedule. The new Amazing, now edited by initial 52 helmer Steve Wacker, will feature a rotating team of writers and artists telling chunks of Peter Parker’s ongoing saga. In other words, things are pretty much just like they were, but they’re now guaranteed to take $2.99 from Spider-fans each week instead of praying they’ll take it. Sources say that Quesada’s already ordered a gold-lined hot tub for his office to go with the platinum-plated Mary Jane Laundry comiquette.

kitka: this should be interesting – I’m looking forward to seeing if this actually works or if they just screw it up
BeaucoupKevin: It’s Marvel.
kitka: ah. right then.

At both Heroes Con and Wizard World Philadelphia, DC announced that Mark Waid was returning to The Flash later this year, relaunching the beleaguered title with a return to the original numbering scheme, a new focus, and a different person in the famous crimson costume. A statement from the three Scans_Daily readers looking forward to Marc Guggenheim’s take on Bart Allen reads as follows: “Oh.”

Despite lowered expectations due to bad reviews, Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer took the #1 spot in the box office, proving that Brad Pitt and George Clooney don’t stand a chance of holding the top spot when the competition consists of Jessica Alba’s breasts and the unspoken longing of nerds.

And now, your Easy Joke of the day…

This past weekend, Marvel announced that Strangers in Paradise creator Terry Moore would be replacing Sean McKeever on Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane. McKeever’s last issue will be #20, and the title will be renamed Mary Jane Loves Gwen Stacy starting with #21.
