There’s a buncha DVDs on sale at Amazon

1 Comment | Posted: April 22nd, 2009 | Filed under: Meta, Outbound Linkage

Setting aside my enmity towards Amazon’s PR department, this is a pretty amazing sale if you’re willing to dig around a bit.

In the $5 and under bin – Not a really, uh, deep selection, but She Wolves Of The Wasteland is $4, so that’s something.

DVD movies for $5-$8 OK, here’s where it starts getting pretty interesting.  Little Shop Of Horrors, one of two or three musicals I like!  Dr Strangelove! The Breakfast Club!  Mannequin and Mannequin 2: On The Move!  Glory!  The Dark Crystal!  And that’s just on the first page!

$8 to $15 Spider-Man 3!  The first season of Barney Miller!  An Affair To Remember!  Jodorowsky’s El Topo! The Steve Reeves Hercules Collection!

$15-$20 The complete Due South!  The first season of Lexx!  A four-film Shaw Brothers box set!  Seasons of Kids In The Hall and Monty Python’s Flying Circus!

$20-$30 Seasons of Rescue Me, Dawson’s Creek, Remington Steele and Profiler!  A six-film Marilyn Monroe box set!  The complete Poirot!  The Criterion edition of The Complete Mr Arkadin!

Over $30 The complete Emma Peel Avengers for $48!  The complete Homicide: Life On The Street for $117!  Nero Wolfe!  The deluxe collector’s edition of La Dolce Vita!

DESIGN FETISH: San Paolo Church by Massimiliano Fuksas

Interior of the Church

View the progress of this building, set to open this Friday in Foligno, Italy and check out Designboom’s photos of the completed structure, which I think they ganked from Arch Daily. It’s a fantastic, minimal design and I absolutely love the “nesting” effect that Fuksas’s group has used.

Revisiting #amazonfail.

This blog entry from the Baltimore Sun‘s Nancy Johnston neatly sums up many of my feelings about how Amazon handled its recent problems concerning materials that had gay and lesbian content. At this point, even with most of the work having been relisted and in its proper place in search, I’m still disappointed and a bit baffled by the way that the company has handled the entire mess. Amazon first pinned the blame on a glitch before letting a hacker take credit and then somehow the French somehow got involved, and over week later, there’s still no apology or clear explanation for what happened from the company.

I can’t help but think that if this had happened with books about black culture or Jewish people, the company would be falling over themselves to fix the gaping hole in their PR, but when it comes to the gay people, they’re really not concerned. Or – worse yet – they’re trying to actively avoid having to make any kind of pro-gay statement that might tick off the conservative minority that gets really upset when people are treated equally, and that bugs the shit out of me.

The Wall Street Journal has an article about and rundown of this year’s winners in the American Institute of Architects Housing Award competition. The vacation home pictured above was designed by Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects and features metal and similarly fire-resistant materials specifically chosen for the fire-plagued Toro Canyon region.

And then there was the time in the 70s that Stan Lee wore a cape and looked like King Pimp.

DESIGN FETISH: Hypo Alpe-Adria Bank by Morphosis Architects

The building leans 14 degrees to minimize harsh solar exposure.

The Morphopedia entry on this bank is fascinating; despite the building’s asymmetrical design and bold composition, it bends beautifully into the Italian landscape of Tavagnacco. Make sure you read their descriptions of the building, where you get an idea of the work’s conceptual underpinnings and how they absorbed the client’s needs into their vision.

Kanye West has this great line in “Welcome To Heartbreak,” My friends shows me pictures of his kids and all I could show him is pictures of my cribs, but if I had Kanye money, one of the things I would invest heavily in is buildings as lovely as this house in Sao Paulo Brazil, designed by Affonso Risi architects.

REVIEW: “Lost Kisses” and “Worms”

Comments Off | Posted: April 16th, 2009 | Filed under: Reviews | Tags: , ,

You read read Lost Kisses 1-6 on the SilberMedia.com site.
Brian John Mitchell sent me over some very small comic books to review and the design fetishist in me immediately liked the form factor. As a package, each issue measures two inches by two inches and provides a surprisingly dense read, especially for the price point.

The body horror in Worms #3 is muted in a few places by some pretty dodgy art from Kimberlee Straub, but Mitchell’s strong first-person narrative compensates nicely; it’s deceptively simple and displays a keen ability to use the text space on each of the tiny pages to great effect, building suspense very nicely. Despite actually quite enjoying this, I immediately wanted to see how the writer would make use of a larger format, where this form factor’s limitations are removed and his scripting would get more room to breathe.

Unfortunately, I was a bit underwhelmed by Mitchell’s autobiographical Lost Kisses comics I was given (issue 7 and 8.) I think a good deal of this is because I’m just past the whole stick figure thing at this point, especially as Matt Feazell and Randall Munroe make almost every other comic using the technique moot. Points for exposing some nasty truths about himself and his toxic relationships, but haven’t we crossed the event horizon for comics of that ilk?

You can read (and order) issues of Lost Kisses and Worms on the Silber Records site, where they’re linked at the bottom.

WILD ENTHUSIASM: Owen Linders & Ethan The Man-Child

The first time I saw Owen Linders’s character Ethan The Man Child at the LCS I call home, I immediately wanted to know who this guy was who was making these prints, and how I could get in touch with him. The visceral reaction I had to Owen’s work reminded me a lot of the first time I saw Jeff Lemire’s art in Stray Dogs, and I have the feeling that I’m seeing the first twitches of life someone who’s going to go places. You can check out Owen’s blog for more information and art.

VIVA

I’m not much of a t-shirt person anymore, and even if I were, I look about as good in red as I do any other color that works hard to maximize my alabaster complexion’s fishiness, but this design by Sean Mort is keen as all get out.
