A Year Of Giveaways: West Coast Blues

Jacques Tardi existential comic noir adaptation of Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel confounds expectations with thoughtful storytelling that manages to avoid clichés even as it explores familiar tropes. Tardi’s work has earned him the rightful status of a legend in his native France and this is a great introduction to his bold, organic artwork and unconventional narrative approach.

To win, just leave a comment with your favorite crime story, regardless of medium, before 12:01AM Eastern on Saturday, January 8, 2010. I’ll pick a winner using Random.org‘s random number generator!

Please note that this contest is only available for readers within the United States and Canada. One entry per person, please.

We have a REMAKE winner!

I’m as tired as anyone of the constant drubbing Jeph Loeb receives from fans1, but Nathan made me smile with his method of “improving” Marvel’s go-to guy for large, stupid comic books:

“I would turn Jeph Loeb into Kate Beaton — hopefully transforming panels upon panels of out-of-context gore (the Blog EATS the Wasp? Really?!) turn into cozy historical larfs (the Blob eats cookies! With Napoleon!)”
Nathan’ll be getting a copy of Adhouse’s Remake and whatever else I can fit into the envelope.

1Oh, you mean you people aren’t tired of bitching incessantly about him yet? Jesus.

CONTEST: Win a copy of Lamar Abrams’ REMAKE!

One of my favorite books picked up from this year’s MoCCA is Lamar Abrams’s slacker superhero romp Remake. In it, Max Guy makes friends, eats bread pudding, and uses his Max Blaster to change things into stuff:

Remake is funny, fast-paced, and lovingly-made parody of genre conventions in both video games and comic books, and I’ve got an extra copy to give away. To win a copy for yourself, just comment below and tell me what you would do with a Max Blaster of your own: what everyday subject would you turn into another thing and why? For example “I would turn my neighbor’s yapping dog into Jenny McCarthy because she deserves to be on a chain for spreading that malarky about autism and vaccines!” This will run through Friday, June 26 at 11:59PM.

The Galactus Mighty Mugg has a new home!

WE HAVE A WINNER.

Emoticripple came in early and came in strong in last week’s contest, winning a Mighty Mugg that he or she may call their very own with the succinct and guffaw-worthy “Galactus so hungry one time he straight peeled the Silver Surfer tryin to get at the chocolate.” Thanks to everybody that participated. This week’s going to be a busy one for me thanks to MoCCA, but we’ll see what we can dig up for next week, OK? I like giving stuff away!

I HUNGER.

Yes, it’s another giveaway, right on the heels of the Potter’s Field contest! This time, though. we’re making it a challenge! Inspired by the Steve Lieber “Hawkeye So Poor” Twitter Extravaganza, I’m asking you to finish this sentence: Galactus so hungry, one time he… in the comments below.

My favorite (yes, you’re subject to my own capricious whims) will get their very own Galactus Mighty Mugg. This contest will run until Midnight EDT on Saturday May 29. (That means that Sunday, 12:01 AM is too late, suckers.)

My site is back and we’ve got CONTEST WINNERS, people!

So, that outage is over now, I guess? The working theory is that we ran into a known issue with wp-cron.php, a scheduler that WordPress uses to talk to servers so there was a lot of advanced UNIX stuff being used that just passes over my head like a pteradon. Thankfully it happened on a holiday so you, the teeming masses, weren’t left completely without inane ramblings and poorly photochopped comic book panels.

But that’s not why you’re here, is it? You want to know if you got yourself some fancy comic books, right?

Something that I realized I didn’t do with the post announcing the Potter’s Field contest is to let you all know that there were actually three copies of Mark Waid and Paul Azaceta’s book up for grabs. Silly me! Anyway, there were over 300 entries from around the world, but the random number generator at Random.org made sussing them out pretty simple. The winners are as follows: KT Wiegman of Los Angeles; Jeff Metzner from Exton, PA; Chicago’s own John Pontoon! I’ve forwarded your contact information to Chip Mosher at BOOM! and you can expect to see something in the mail in the very near future, gang!

We may have another contest as early as tomorrow, so come back soon, y’hear?

Thanks to my haranguing BOOM! Studios marketing head Chip Mosher to pony up when it comes to the tchotchkes, we’ve got three copies of the brand-new hardcover collection for the critically-acclaimed Potter’s Field to give away! Rightly praised by The Onion AV Club, who described it as “first-rate crime fiction, brought to noirish life by Paul Azaceta” before giving it a grade of A-, this collection features the original miniseries along with the Potter’s Field: Stone Cold one-shot and a previously unseen “lost” story by Waid and Steve Yeowell. For the publishing fetishists, the book is a damn fine object on its own with a silver-inked jacket by J.G. Jones and one of those fabric bookmark things that mean you won’t have to use a subscription card from the soon-to-be-deceased Wired magazine to keep your place.

How do you win a copy? Send an email to pottersfieldcontest@gmail.com with your name and address before 11:59PM on Sunday, May 24 and three winners will be chosen using a sophisticated system involving a random number generator and me going through the inbox to find the corresponding email.
