DESIGN FETISH: Cerith Wyn Evans and the Venice Architecture Biennale

I’m a sucker for nicely-done neon text and Cerith Wyn Evans’ display at the Venice Architecture Biennale is exactly the sort of thing I like, but I can’t help noticing that it bears a similarity to Mark Farrow’s sleeve design for and overall marketing concept for Fundamental, the 2006 album by Pet Shop Boys. (This is, of course, something only I would notice and/or care about. I’m aware of that.)

I’m sure I’m seeing too much into it, but there it is. It’s important to note that Evans has gone with properly capitalized letters and punctuation, something that, on other releases, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe insisted upon. Interestingly enough, Evans and Pet Shop Boys both worked with Derek Jarman, too.

I live near a pedestrian/bicycle trail where people frequently walk their dogs. I’ve always felt the signage was far too polite and think this is a logical next step.

I saw this a while back and was just reminded of it again. A creative and witty re-interpretation that takes nothing away from the casual, consumer-oriented grace of the original work. Graphicology has a nice look at the video and some side-by-side comparisons.
