I love, “this is but a sampling of the mail we received” which implies, to me, that the rest of the mail excoriated them for their horrible decision.
I remember really enjoying the Waid/Garney run on Captain America those many years ago (it was the first time I ever picked up the book regularly) then running — screaming — when they put Liefeld on the book. I didn’t pick it up again until Brubaker started writing it.

What exactly was “controversial” about the style of Jim Lee’s Fantastic Four? Other than the perceived audacity of “covering” Stan and Jack? I remember the first six issues of the comic reading like a fun, supercondensed movie version of Fantastic Four.
I forget, was Heroes Reborn always supposed to be a limited engagement, or was it open-ended?
Howard, I think the “left coast” comment refers to Lee and Liefeld who are based in California. Or at least were at the time.

In defense of “Secret Wars,” when the Wasp died in that series, the heroes’ response was not to stand around talking and moping, but to go beat people up. When she died again with the rest of the heroes, Reed figured out how to bring her back pretty quickly.
That’s right, she died TWICE in that series! And that was AFTER she singlehandedly beat a team that included Magneto, Storm and Professor X! And…OK, look, maybe “in defense of” was the wrong phrase to use here, but I was 12, darn it.
Yeah.
From the same company that told us they only got letters of exceptionally high praise for Secret Wars!
“Unique enchantment.” Heh.

HAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAH.
Um, unless I’ve confused my geography, only one of those letters originates from the “left” coast.

Good Lord! *Choke*
I too, have been rendered breathless by Mr. Liefeld’s artwork, but not in a good way.
