War-porn that seems to exist only to show off Billy Tucci’s research skills, featuring too-stiff, photo-referenced art and captions that talk at the reader instead of engaging them in any sort of story. Every character is either spouting cinematic clichés or serving as Easy-Bake Social Commentary. While I understand Tucci’s desire to “do right” by veterans, this ponderous, self-important slog through factoids and beautifully-drawn weaponry probably won’t succeed. Instead of this, pick up any of Garth Ennis’s War Story comics or Showcase Presents Sgt Rock. While the former may not feature an Ice Cream Soldier and the latter may seem a bit goofy, they’re both much more readable as comic books while pandering less to History Channel fetishists.
