I love how in Observe and Report, there is never any doubt that Rogan is a mentally disturbed individual who gets better or worse depending on how much medication he takes, but even at his best is a bit whacked.

Like King of Comedy, Tim?

Ray Liotta is always at his best when his character is unlikable, and he did a fantastic job. I liked Amy Smart much better in Smiley Face, though.

I also thought Observe & Report was a great film - and it works even better if you can convince yourself that everything after he gets the shit beat out of him by the cops is a fantasy sequence.

BTDKYD is a movie that I can appreciate for its amazing style and production, and the performances, but I found it to be really unenjoyable. Maybe I was not in the mood to see a movie so...bleak? I don't even know if that's the word, which is a shame, b/c Lumet is one of my favorites.

I saw Observe and Report when it came out theatrically, and I can safely say I've never seen an audience react quite like how they reacted to that one.

About half of the people made the mistake of thinking they were supposed to be rooting for Rogen's character, that it was a standard-issue comedy and what he does at the end is a standard-issue comedy protagonist victory. They were kinda scary. The other half was pretty visibly disgusted and felt like they had seen a very different movie than they were expecting (and it was completely promoted as a good-natured but crude Apatow-style comedy).

Like you, I thought it was a really good, darkly funny character study of a disturbed guy, but I don't think that was the general consensus.
