Ida Lupino plays Mary Maiden, a blind woman who\u2019s dragged into his quest through circumstance. He might find redemption in those snow-covered wastes, but success for him could leave her alone forever.&nbsp; 1951\u2019s <em>On Dangerous Ground<\/em> has a hell of a hook, and thanks to director Nicholas Ray\u2019s ability to balance the precision plotting of a straight-up crime thriller with the emotional weight of a melodrama, it works pretty damn well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"733\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-asset-1024x733.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-asset-1024x733.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-asset-300x215.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-asset-768x549.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-asset.jpeg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is our first Nicholas Ray movie, and that\u2019s weird, isn\u2019t it? From the very beginning, his filmography shows a director that could take the artistic and meld it with the commercial perfectly. The writer\/director\/actor\u2019s best-known works among general audiences are the Technicolor triumphs <em>The Flying Leathernecks<\/em> and <em>Rebel Without A Cause<\/em>, but noir nerds will talk your ear off about his first film, 1948\u2019s <em>They Live By Night <\/em>\u2014 part of the outsiders-on-the-run subgenre that would later house <em>Gun Crazy<\/em> and <em>Bonnie and Clyde<\/em>\u00a0 \u2014 and the Bogart \/ Grahame classic <em>In A Lonely Place<\/em>. Ray was the kind of director that inspired entire generations of filmmakers, with Jean-Luc Godard once declaring \u201cThere is Cinema. And the cinema is Nicholas Ray.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t need to go into Ida Lupino and Robert Ryan, do I? I\u2019ve sung her praises on multiple occasions (and likely will again, soon) and while we\u2019ve never featured Robert Ryan in one of these screenings before, he\u2019s a standout in the genre, known for noirs like the boxing drama <em>The Set-Up<\/em>, <em>Crossfire <\/em>(an engrossing procedural about antisemitism in the military), and <em>Bad Day At Black Rock<\/em>. He was also reunited with Ida Lupino a year after <em>On Dangerous Ground<\/em> in Harry Horner&#8217;s good-but-not-great <em>Beware, My Lovely<\/em>. Like Sterling Hayden, he\u2019s the kind of guy who can pull off the stiff upper lip thing without losing any humanity in his performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"803\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/on-dangerous-ground_8pU07s-1024x803.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/on-dangerous-ground_8pU07s-1024x803.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/on-dangerous-ground_8pU07s-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/on-dangerous-ground_8pU07s-768x602.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/on-dangerous-ground_8pU07s-1536x1204.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/on-dangerous-ground_8pU07s.jpg 1865w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we come to everyone\u2019s favorite part: trivia and what reviewers thought of the picture!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rumor has it that Ida Lupino took over direction for a few days while Ray was ill. There\u2019s nothing in the production files to back this up, but Lupino would soon make her own mark as a director. She even personally directed Ray\u2019s screen tests for her tennis drama <em>Hard, Fast and Beautiful.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ray and screenwriter A.I. Bezzerides spent time with the Boston PD while researching backstory for Ryan\u2019s Jim Wilson. They even rode with detectives in the South End.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look out for the hand-held camera work by cinematographer George E. Diskant, a real rarity at the time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bernard Hermann scored this, and if it sounds a little bit familiar, it\u2019s because he recycled large sections for Hitchcock\u2019s <em>North by Northwest<\/em> and the opening theme of the TV show <em>Have Gun, Will Travel<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bosley Crowther of the <em>New York Times <\/em>hated this movie. He said that the story was shallow, that the behavior of Robert Ryan\u2019s misanthropic cop was only \u201csuperficially explained\u201d and that Ida Lipino was \u201cmawkishly stagey.\u201d&nbsp; \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I personally think Bosley Crowther can go soak his head.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tonight\u2019s movie may be a relatively minor entry in Ray\u2019s filmography, made on the cheap for RKO during the company\u2019s tumultuous Howard Hughes years, but with a cast this good and a setting as unique as we have here, it\u2019s certainly worth your time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next month, we kick off our western noir series with the Coen Brothers\u2019 first feature, <em>Blood Simple<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote this introduction for The Mesilla Valley Film Society\u2019s screening of&nbsp;On Dangerous Ground in December, 2023.
