Wild.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/business\/2023\/04\/cars-buttons-touchscreens-vw-porsche-nissan-hyundai.html\">Automakers have discovered that people hate touchscreens!<\/a> (Slate)<\/strong><br>I hadn&#8217;t driven for over 20 years when we moved to New Mexico, and while our 2016 Subaru Forester only uses the touchscreen for the entertainment center and navigation,<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000002b00000000000000000_42\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000002b00000000000000000_42-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000002b00000000000000000_42-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">I recently rented a Toyota Corolla for a business trip and about 2\/3rds of the things I needed to do were hidden behind two clicks.<\/span> I still hate it. Back in the 80s and 90s (and long before then), we used these weird things called <em>buttons<\/em> and <em>knobs<\/em> to perform complex tasks such as tuning the radio and turning up the air conditioning and you know what? It just worked. I get the whiz-bang factor that the touchscreen offers, but the ability to keep my eyes on the road while skipping over the skits on a Biggie album trumps that. (Like many of the worst things in modern technology, the growing touchscreen trend can be traced back to Elon Musk.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2023\/04\/stephen-root-barry-succession-always-great-awards-insider\">A great look at the career of Stephen Root.<\/a> (Vanity Fair)<\/strong><br>In the last two weeks, RK and I have seen Root in <em>Succession<\/em>, <em>Perry Mason<\/em><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000002b00000000000000000_42\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000002b00000000000000000_42-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000002b00000000000000000_42-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">Yes, we are just getting to that. We know, okay?<\/span>, and, of course, <em>Barry<\/em>. We have been absolutely loving it. It&#8217;s a testament to his ability as an actor that he&#8217;s playing completely different characters in each role while still having that ineffable groundedness in his performance. This served as a good reminder that I need to watch Joel Coen&#8217;s <em>The Tragedy of Macbeth<\/em>, where he returns to his theatrical roots (no pun intended) and plays Porter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/neal.fun\/space-elevator\/\">Take a ride on a space elevator.<\/a> (neal.fun)<\/strong><br>You think you know just how big the atmosphere is, and then you start scrolling. And you keep scrolling. <em>And scrolling<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2023\/04\/24\/crooks-mistaken-bet-on-encrypted-phones\">Criminals bought encrypted phones, or so they thought.<\/a> (The New Yorker)<\/strong><br>A great, longish read about the history and (likely) downfall of the much-coveted hardened phone. Maybe more important than the education offered here is the fact that this piece introduced me to the terrific Dutch word <em>boeventelefoons, <\/em>which translates to &#8220;Crook Phones.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, it&#8217;s like BoingBoing never left.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":46,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-42","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-links"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Here are some internet things that I liked this week.
