{"id":75,"date":"2023-04-28T19:14:50","date_gmt":"2023-04-28T19:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/?p=75"},"modified":"2024-01-29T15:35:58","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T21:35:58","slug":"ida-lupino-mother-of-us-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/ida-lupino-mother-of-us-all\/","title":{"rendered":"Ida Lupino: The Mother Of Us All"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>I wrote this for the Mesilla Valley Film Society\u2019s screening of <strong>The Hitch-Hiker<\/strong> in March, 2023.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Ida Lupino (1918-1995) is undoubtedly best known for her roles in <em>film noir<\/em> classics like the Bogart flick <em>High Sierra<\/em>, Raoul Walsh\u2019s <em>They Live By Nigh<\/em>t, and 1948\u2019s <em>Road House <\/em>(in which she sings quite well), the real highlight of her career is the four-year stretch between 1949 and 1953. In that period, she co-founded her own production company (The Filmakers, with then-husband Collier Young) and directed six low-budget, issue-oriented pictures: <em>Not Wanted<\/em>; <em>Never Fear<\/em>; <em>Outrage<\/em>;<em> Hard, Fast and Beautiful<\/em>; <em>The Hitch-Hiker<\/em> and <em>The Bigamist<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(A quick aside: we can thank Jack Warner for this burst of creativity. It was during one of her many suspensions \u2014 she frequently objected to the studio head\u2019s casting choices for her \u2014 that she took it upon herself to learn about directing and editing films.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first movie from The Filmakers was <em>Not Wanted<\/em>, a frank drama about an unwed mother that Lupino produced and co-wrote with Paul Jerrico. Elmer Clifton was the film\u2019s original director, but he suffered a heart attack during production, prompting Lupino to take the helm. She\u2019s uncredited in the movie\u2019s final release, but it\u2019s very easy to see the brisk, efficient voice used here in her next film, <em>Never Fear.<\/em> This low budget drama starred <em>Not Wanted<\/em>\u2019s Sally Forrest as a young dancer felled by polio, a disease that the writer-director had herself suffered in the 1930s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1177\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/GettyImages-517423738-d643032ec06b4b04bab603cbae2e3b09.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The next movie, 1950\u2019s <em>Outrage<\/em>, would be only the second post-Hays Code Hollywood production to deal with the issue of rape, while <em>Hard, Fast and Beautiful<\/em> told the story of a mother exploiting her tennis player daughter\u2019s talents. While the latter is the least of Lupino\u2019s directorial efforts, Sally Forrest is very good as the lead and you can spot Lupino and her <em>On Dangerous Ground<\/em> co-star Robert Ryan in a few of the crowd scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most intense (and popular) film Lupino directed from this period is the 71-minute-long <em>The Hitch-Hiker<\/em>, which you should see (or will be seeing if you\u2019re hearing me talk about this in the theater.) <em>The Hitch-Hiker<\/em> is the definition of lean, a ripped-from-the-headlines tale adapted by the blacklisted Robert L. Joseph that clocks in at just 71 minutes. It stars Edmond O\u2019Brien and Frank Lovejoy as a pair of men on a fishing trip who come across Perry Mason\u2019s Hamilton Burger himself, William Talman, playing the psychopathic Emmett Myers.\u00a0 This taut thriller is generally cited as the first (and only) classic Hollywood <em>noir<\/em> directed by a woman, which seems a real shame to me, given how poorly the genre generally treats its leading ladies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"709\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ida.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ida.jpg 709w, https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ida-300x254.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After this came Lupino\u2019s final film as director for over a decade: <em>The Bigamist<\/em>. She is in front of the camera for this one, too, starring with Joan Fontaine, <em>The Hitch-Hiker<\/em>\u2019s Edmond O\u2019Brien, and Edmund Gwynn. The movie is quite good as a drama, but it\u2019s the behind-the-scenes story that comes to mind whenever the film comes up. By the time <em>The Bigamist<\/em> was made, Lupino and Collier Young had divorced and he had married Fontaine. With Lupino\u2019s permission, producer and screenwriter Young mined his own infidelities and fallibility to give the titular character some veritas and you can definitely feel three people working through something during <em>The Bigamist<\/em>\u2019s 80 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After The Bigamist, there were only two more films to come from The Filmmakers: Don Siegel\u2019s <em>Private Hell 36<\/em> (co-written by and starring Lupino) and <em>Mad At The World<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lupino would move on to TV, directing episodes of shows like <em>Alfred Hitchcock Presents<\/em>, <em>The Twilight Zone<\/em>, and <em>The Untouchables<\/em>. She also moved to TV as an actress, appearing in front of the camera in 19 episodes of <em>Four Star Playhouse<\/em> along with guest stints on <em>Batman<\/em>, <em>The Wild Wild Wes<\/em>t, <em>The Mod Squad<\/em> and even playing Johnny Cash\u2019s wife in the excellent <em>Columbo<\/em> installment, \u201cSwan Song.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/01-ida-lapino-gettyimages-514682130-768x1024.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/01-ida-lapino-gettyimages-514682130-768x1024.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/01-ida-lapino-gettyimages-514682130-225x300.webp 225w, https:\/\/www.beaucoupkevin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/01-ida-lapino-gettyimages-514682130.webp 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lupino\u2019s final theatrical picture as director was <em>The Trouble With Angels<\/em>, a 1966 comedy about the students at St. Francis Academy and the nuns they drove crazy. Her two final films as an actress were the cult classic <em>The Devil\u2019s Rain<\/em>, which featured an <strong>amazing<\/strong> performance from Ernest Borgnine and <em>The Food of the Gods,<\/em> a much-panned American International adaptation of H.G. Wells designed for drive-ins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Lupino\u2019s directorial efforts are rightfully recognized by film aficionados, it\u2019s sad that this smart, driven woman\u2019s career didn\u2019t recover from the breakup of The Filmakers. In a better world, we\u2019d talk about Lupino with the same reverence that we give Kubrick, Scorcese, and Welles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Oh, and the title of this piece? It\u2019s the phrase that Lupino had stitched across the back of the director\u2019s chair that she brought to every set she worked on. She truly believed that her job was to be the mother of each production with all the responsibility that entails.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote this for the Mesilla
